Board Games as Educational Tools: Learning Through Play

Board games are increasingly recognized not only as forms of entertainment, but also as effective tools for education and social learning. Various studies show that learning through play can improve knowledge retention, motivation, and social interaction—especially when complex social issues are involved.

One important research that supports this approach is “The effectiveness of intervention with board games: a systematic review” published in BioPsychoSocial Medicine (2019). This systematic review analyzed 27 studies that used board games as educational or intervention tools across different contexts, including public health, education, and community engagement.

Key Findings from the Research

The study found that board games have a positive impact on educational outcomes, particularly in three main areas:

  1. Improvement of Knowledge
Several studies reviewed showed that board games helped participants better understand specific topics, such as health education and social issues. Learning becomes more accessible because information is delivered through experience, not just explanation.

  2. Increased Motivation and Engagement
Board games make learning more engaging and enjoyable. Participants are more motivated to take part in discussions, problem-solving, and reflection when learning happens through play rather than one-way instruction.

  3. Enhanced Social Interaction and Reflection
Because board games require communication, collaboration, and shared decision-making, they naturally encourage social learning. Players reflect not only on outcomes, but also on how their choices affect others—an important aspect of empathy-based education.

The review concludes that, although further research is still needed, board games show strong potential as effective educational and intervention tools, especially when addressing complex, real-world issues that require understanding, empathy, and collective responsibility.

Relevance to Pawventure: From Stray to Stay

This research provides a strong academic foundation for the development of Pawventure: From Stray to Stay, a tabletop board game currently being built by the Sandbox team. Pawventure places players in the role of urban stray cats, navigating everyday challenges such as finding food, interacting with humans, facing health risks, and encountering possibilities of care, sterilization, or adoption.

By using gameplay to represent real urban animal welfare conditions, Pawventure aligns with the findings of the research: learning becomes more impactful when players experience situations directly, make decisions, and reflect on their consequences together. Rather than relying solely on lectures or data, Pawventure uses play as a medium to cultivate empathy, awareness, and discussion around human responsibility toward stray animals.

Through this approach, Sandbox positions Pawventure not just as a game, but as an educational platform—where research, design, and social reflection meet—demonstrating how board games can support public learning and encourage more compassionate and sustainable ways of coexisting with other living beings.
