Sandbox Is Building Pawventure: Learning Empathy Through Play and the Lives of Urban Stray Cats
The Sandbox team is currently developing Pawventure: From Stray to Stay, a tabletop board game designed to explore empathy, shared responsibility, and the lived realities of urban stray cats. The project emerges from a simple yet often overlooked question: how do stray cats experience the city we share with them?
In many urban environments, stray cats live side by side with humans—moving through streets, markets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Despite this close proximity, their lives are frequently ignored or reduced to numbers and policies. Pawventure seeks to open a different way of understanding these realities, not through lectures or statistics alone, but through a reflective and participatory play experience.
As a tabletop board game, Pawventure invites players to step into the perspective of stray cats navigating everyday challenges: searching for food, encountering humans, facing health risks, and moving through uncertain pathways toward care, sterilization, or adoption. Players experience the city not as a backdrop, but as a complex ecosystem shaped by human choices and structural conditions.
The game is designed with mechanics that mirror real social and ecological dynamics in urban settings. Players are not simply competing for individual success. Instead, they are confronted with collective dilemmas—how limited resources are distributed, how human interventions affect animal welfare, and how empathy can function as a strategy for survival rather than a passive emotion. Event cards, interactions, and decision points are grounded in real situations faced not only by stray cats, but also by volunteers, veterinarians, and city residents who coexist with them.
Beyond entertainment, Pawventure functions as a tool for education and social reflection. It opens conversations about animal welfare, human responsibility, and ethical approaches to managing stray cat populations. By placing a non-human perspective at the center of gameplay, the experience encourages players to reconsider the city through a rarely acknowledged lens—one that recognizes urban sustainability as something that must include other living beings.
Within the broader context of Sandbox, Pawventure is approached as an experimental platform. Art becomes a language of empathy, play becomes a method of learning, and research provides the foundation for design. The development process involves field observation, dialogue with animal welfare practitioners, and continuous visual and narrative exploration to ensure the game remains grounded in lived realities rather than abstraction.
Through Pawventure, the Sandbox team aims to demonstrate that games can serve as powerful tools for understanding complex social issues. More than a finished product, Pawventure is an ongoing process—one that seeks to nurture care, invite reflection, and inspire more thoughtful and sustainable relationships between humans and the animals who share our cities.
